The essay

I aspire to become an executive in the automotive industry. This ambitious goal is the culmination of influences afflicted upon me by my family, environment, and schooling.

My mom introduced me to my first love when I was in the second grade: she took me to the BMW dealership. I can remember vividly to this day the moment I set eyes on that jet black 750 iL. From that point on I became obsessed with cars and everything affiliated with them. I babied that car, learning to perform basic maintenance and cleaning it regularly. It wasn’t until my sister began dating her present day fiancé Evan Lowe that my love became a passion- He was a tried and true gearhead. Evan taught me how to make cars go faster and perform better. He even took me to the track with him on occasion. With the blessings of my mother and soon to be brother-in-law I was free to pursue my love: everything automotive.

Car related magazines were not the only literature available to my inner grease monkey. My father took pride in filling my environment with books and other reading material. In the many books adorning my book shelves I found what is without a doubt the most influential book I have ever read. Lee Iacocca’s book “Where Have All the Leaders Gone” discussed everything American and connected most of it to the automotive industry. This book exerted the final force needed for me to realize that this industry was my calling, because it made me realize that not only can the automobile be my love but also a place where I can make an honest living doing something that is arguably patriotic.

Knowing that I wanted to work in the automotive industry was not an accurate and thus attainable goal. Sophomore year I took Marketing and realized that not only did I love cars but I excelled in the business fields. The course was always interesting and I was always learning something new and exciting. My parents remarked that I talked about the course as much as I talked about cars. In this newly discovered field I found what I believe to be my calling. (pardon the cliché)

These influences made clear to me that I could work in the field I was passionate about and employ my natural abilities.

My subversive nature fueled my ideas of entering the corporate world at a young age. Last summer, I was given the opportunity to work for an online business, which sold accessories for phones, PDA’s, and mp3 players, owned by my cousin. In the beginning, I thought of it only as a way to earn money and gain some independence from my parents in both financial and nonfinancial aspects of my life. However, as I learned more and more about the growing opportunities in the business industry, I became intrigued and inquisitive about everything and anything pertaining to this new world that I had stumbled upon.

During my time employed at Oriongadgets, I learned a lot about affiliate marketing and web design. My cousin was my mentor as well as my employer and he explained to me what it took to start any kind of business. Due to my level of interest in affiliate marketing and my dedication to possibly establishing my own company someday, my cousin offered me a business proposition. If I created a website to advertise his products and increase his business revenue, he would give me commission for every product sold from my website.

Throughout the period of time that I designed the website and began advertising it, I grew in many ways and a lot of people saw the difference. These changes took place as I learned to communicate with business affiliates and began on the road to starting my own business. As I grew less and less dependent on my parents, I witnessed them giving me more freedom in my own life. I began to understand money management and how to make time for family, friends and myself.

Although I did not earn a ton of money, I gained something invaluable, knowledge. I matured as an individual, became independent, and formulated a goal for my future. My first job, as well as my family influenced me incredibly and catapulted my interest level in business management to a whole new level.

Why does everyone have such a NEGATIVE attitude towards internet marketing?

Honestly, is there money to be made in affiliate marketing, or is it just pyramid schemes & other frauds?

I am just beginning to research affiliate marketing, like Click Bank, and need to know the truth. Is it just another scheme, pyramid or other in nature?

The numbers the various companies give seam very far fetched, as if a genie granted someone a single wish. I mean $1,000 a day? Seriously?

And each version of the marketing comes with quotes from “users” who claim to have made money? Couldn’t anyone just lie and say they earned money? I mean, how do I know the “real” folks saying the program made them money weren’t paid to promote the very company claiming to make you money.

So far, the few options i have explored have all turned out to be shams or unethical, or had subscription costs. For example, there was one regarding buying ticket master tickets and reselling them. That is scalping, an unethical business where there are dime a dozen scalpers already online.

Not to mention all of the emails I now receive trying to promote a product/program to make money online. I’m being bombarded with lies that I need to “act now” or i’ll miss out. Then there are the “webinars” that are there to make the author, strictly, of the webinar money. Do they actual give me anything useful? Why are there webinars in the first place?

All of these unanswered questions have left a bad taste in my mouth. I just want the truth! Can there be legit money made online w/o scamming, lying, selling cheap merchandise, or roping in unsuspected victim into throwing away money in something that isn’t even a physical object?

Please be honest with me here. I’m attempting to create income so me and my girl can make a living, enough to get by w/o too much discomfort, while we are both in school. I do not need to be patronized with false information, just so a yahoo answers user can bump/promote a company.
